Non-Professional Bedbug treatments usually need multiple retreats. A non-professional treatment is one that is done by a Do-It-Yourselfer (DIY). One reason for DIY treatments is the costs of professional service. Professional Bed Bug treatments are expensive. Costs range from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand dollars for a single treatment.

Unfortunately, the DIY treatments are not always successful on the 1st shot. Retreat, retreat, and retreat are quite common. After several unsuccessful attempts, a professional exterminator is usually hired.

It is not that the products being used in a DIY treatment to exterminate are not effective, they most likely are, to some capacity. The reason for recurrences is usually due to the lack of knowledge along with following specific steps in the required protocol.

Pest Control aka (exterminating) is not as simple as some believe. It is a serious business and a real profession. Licensing is required in most States and specific training before being issued a license is required. A licensee must demonstrate they know the proper application of all products and as well as where the products are permitted to be used. Consumer safety as well applicator safety is paramount. There are always precautions with things that need to be known when using pesticide chemicals.

The pest control professional knows the specifics to properly treat. The professional also knows the target pest’s behavior and specific areas requiring attention in the treatment.

Some of the Bed Bugs sprayed by the DIYer do die. But, to end the situation completely you need to treat specific areas addressing where eggs may be waiting to hatch. There are multiple areas to treat with an incubation period of usually 6–10-days, about a week and a half. Then, come the nymphs, the next generation.

Most professionals will use a combination of different types of products. A combination of sprays and insecticidal dusts.

Some of the products act as an immediate kill, others work as an on-guard as a residual kill after the treatment is complete. These are products that remain active for any bugs that are missing during the treatment, including the eggs that have not yet hatched.

A well-fed female Bed Bug can produce about 500 eggs per year. Development time from egg to reproductive adult can be complete in as little as 6 weeks (about 1 and a half months). The point here is that an infestation can consist of hundreds of adults, juveniles (nymphs) and unhatched eggs.
